A Grove rough-terrain crane is working on a large-scale construction project
at one of the biggest US military training areas outside the US. The RT875E
crane is on site at the Efficient Basing-Grafenwoehr facility, in the town of
Grafenwoehr in eastern Bavaria,
Germany. It will perform a wide range of lifting duties over a 16-month
period. It is currently assembling prefabricated elements for 835 houses on
the new Netzaberg Housing Area.
The RT875E is owned by rental company
Wiesbauer, based in Bietigheim-Bissingen, and is working for local contractor
Zapf. Michael Begemann, crane operator for Wiesbauer, said the RT875E’s best
features are its ease of control and ability to work steadily in any
conditions.
“Our main reason for choosing the RT875E on this job was
its ability to move quickly between lifts. Its off-road mobility is
excellent,” he said. “It is also incredibly easy to operate, even when lifting
loads of up to 20 t.”
The 68 t capacity RT875E combines
powerful lifting ability with excellent reach. It has a four-section main boom
of 39 m and a maximum tip height of 71 m, when configured with a jib
extension. The crane’s features include a removable counterweight, four main
steering modes, and ergonomically designed controls. It has an E series cab,
which optimizes operator comfort and productivity and can be tilted to 20°.
Outriggers adjust in both vertical and horizontal directions.
Grafenwoehr
currently houses the 7th Army Training Command; a unit that provides testing
and training for military apparatus used by US and NATO forces. To consolidate
its command and control headquarters, the United States Army Europe is moving
3500 soldiers and their families from across Europe to this new installation.
This requires the renovation of existing facilities and the construction of
new homes.
When complete, the Netzaberg Housing area will contain an
elementary and middle school, a chapel, a child development center, a youth
services center, sports fields and a small shop.
